Housing for Veterans

Service in the Armed Forces is a positive and rewarding experience for the majority of those who serve. The unique and shared experience of life in the Armed Forces ties individuals to a community of support and comradeship that is life-long. However, for some leaving the services   who experience mental health illnesses, it can be severely debilitating on their life chances, their families, job opportunities and wellbeing. These individuals need the support and respect that they are owed and this is why First Choice Housing Association working in partnership with Alabare are committed to providing supported housing for veterans. Working together in partnership we aim to deliver 72 bed-spaces utilising the first round of LIBOR funding and  together we hope to achieve many homes throughout Wales with the first planned to open in the summer of 2014.

First Choice opens Ty Dewr Wrexham Wales Homes for Veterans to support ex-Service personnel

First Choice Housing Association are delighted to announce the opening of a new, purpose built home developed with  MOD Veterans Accommodation Libor funding  to help support Veterans who are struggling with the transition to civilian life.

The home, the first on such a scale of its kind in Wales aims to provide housing for veterans who are facing homeless for reasons including relationship breakdown, mental or physical ill health and debt. Ty Dewr offers 12 en-suite bedrooms in this newly refurbished, high quality building set in a tranquil area with easy access to the town centre, with a Trim Track gymnasium built into the grounds. One room offers full wheelchair access. Therapeutic training will also be available at the nearby Erlas Victorian Walled Garden project.

First Choice Housing Association was established in 1988 and provides quality accommodation solutions for people with  learning disabilities,  challenging behaviour and Veterans across Wales and Shropshire.  They aim to be the provider of choice for local authorities to deliver well-designed homes in which people with a range of specialist needs can lead fulfilling lives.

Wales Homes for Veterans will provide the ongoing support, an initiative of Alabaré, a charity who have been caring for the South West and Wales’ most vulnerable people for 25 years by providing shelter, practical and emotional support.  Homes for Veterans was launched when the charity identified a need for bespoke homeless services for those in the Veteran community who were struggling to adjust to life in the civilian world.
Hilary Ryan, Chief Executive of First Choice Housing Association said “ we are very proud to be presenting our first Veterans accommodation funded through the MOD VAF fund and are grateful for the partnership support from the MOD, Alabare and Wrexham CBC. We look forward to receiving the first residents and in due course seeing the impact the accommodation and support will have on them. Plans are at an advanced stage for a Veterans self-build project in Wrexham with recruitment anticipated in Spring 2016.

Speaking about the opening of the new home, Andrew Lord, Chief Executive of Alabaré said,

“We are thrilled to be working in partnership with First Choice Housing Association, providing outstanding care and accommodation for some of North Wales’ most vulnerable men and women.  Without First Choice’s dedication and hard work attracting the capital funding from the LIBOR fund, this amazing project would not have been possible.

“Ty Dewr offers Veterans the very best in care and support, providing them with a pathway back to independent living.  Our team of experts will be with these ex-service men and women every step of the way, ensuring that they are given the best possibility chance to progress through life.”
