Action Man Mark!

Alison Johns & Hilary Ryan

Mark Lloyd first came to Alabaré in January 2015 and moved into a First Choice Housing Association property in Cardiff as part of the joint partnership “ Wales Homes for Veterans” initiative in Cardiff.

Mark is a Veteran of the Third Battalion (3 Para) and served in Afghanistan doing tours of duty in 2010. As a result of his service he suffers with four herniated discs in his back and has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He lives with both physical and emotional difficulties but despite this Mark has made some great achievements.

In February 2015 he spent a week skiing in Le Plagne in the Swiss Alps, with the Not Forgotten Association, and won two awards, one for the best skier progressing from novice slopes to black runs and his second was an award for demonstrating the single best attitude to skiing that had ever been seen!

He went on to participate in the Phoenix Winter Games with Help for Heroes at Tedworth House and was part of the winning team. Individually he won the Skiing Competition and Clay Pigeon shooting and was runner up in the Archery. Mark has also become involved with Support our Paras, formerly known as the Afghan Trust. They run a racing team with two cars entered in the British Touring Car Championship. Known as the Infiniti Team they have £2,000,000 sponsorship and Mark is a data analyst for them.

Mark’s full programme of activity has got him and his life back on track and he hopes to gain a full time job with the racing team and eventually set himself up in the property development business.

My new home

Beverley lives in a bungalow in Shropshire, which is one of our completed leasehold schemes. Here Beverley tells us her story about moving into her new home.

“I wanted to know what would ever happen to me should and when my mum die. It worried me. When she died, I had no choice of where I could live due to my disability, as I needed 24 hour support. I was so unhappy I had to move into a large residential home.

When the social worker told me about the bungalow being built in Oswestry and that I could go on a list of applicants, I was so pleased as I would be in my own accommodation and have support. When I was told I could move in I was so excited.

The transition was very good. I was kept up to date with all the news and progress. I was allowed to choose my own colour scheme for my bedroom, which was great fun. Best if all I felt in control of everything. I was allowed to pick my own staff, I made questions I would like to ask and everyone was so supportive and helpful while I was interviewing.

I also chose my own furniture, curtains and where I wanted to put up my pictures. I never would have been able to do that anywhere else. It was all made so easy for me.

My bungalow is great. I can eat what I want when I want which is so important to me. Everyone is and has been fantastic. I am so happy to be in my own home.”

Taking Part with First Choice

Stephen lives in one of our properties in Cardiff and is supported by Innovate Trust. Stephen is a new member of our Taking Part Group and has also been involved in our Tenant Editorial Group that helps produce our quarterly tenant’s newsletter.

“I like being involved in the groups as you get to meet the other tenants. I like to have my say and these groups help you to do that. I attended the newsletter group where we looked at the newsletter and we told First Choice what we thought of it and shared our stories. They put my story in the newsletter and I won the Star Story prize. It was marvellous.”

Our home

Jo, Rebecca and Victoria live in a property in Swansea.

Jo says: “I lived in Sketty before moving to our First Choice house. I attended Neath college and also did cookery classes. My bathroom and my bedroom are my favourite things about the house. We live really close to the shops which is great. In my spare time I enjoy watching my favourite films, Star Trek Voyager and Lord of the Rings.”

Rebecca says “Before I lived in my First Choice home, I lived in Dunvant in Swansea. I used to attend college every Tuesday where I completed Basic Maths, English and IT. I really like our new house because it is nice and big and we live near the shops, which is great. The local community has lots of friendly people. I really enjoy reading and doing word searches.”
Victoria says “Before moving into our First Choice Home I lived in Bishopston. I really enjoy living in the house because I live with my friends. The local community is great because we live near the shops. There is a duck pond nearby which I like to visit and feed bread to the ducks. I really enjoy walking in my spare time and I attend Gorseinon College once we week where I do a cookery class. I like to cook for my friends and soups and casseroles are my favourite thing to cook.”
